This marketplace located on an ancient crossroad of routes to the Prague Castle and Vltava crossings was documented as early as in 11th century; Pohořelec has become part of the Hradčany town under the rule of Charles IV. The name is derived from the frequent fires this place gone through. Unlike the nearby Hradčanské square, which transformed into a representative aristocratic residential area during the Baroque period, Pohořelec has maintained a more low-key character and even today it leaves a calm, almost homely, impression; this alone makes it a suitable starting point for sightseeing along the Royal Route, the coronation path of Czech kings.
